CANOE
ARTIFACTS
Canoes are
an indispensable mode of transport in the coastal areas of Papua New Guinea. Some
types of canoes are purely workhorses and are not decorated. Larger canoes used
for transporting warriors or chiefs may be decorated with accessories such as
ornately carved prows, splashboards or shields. Paddles may also be plain or
decorated, depending on their purpose.
