OTHER INFO:

These bilums are woven from hand-made twine from the bark of the two-leaf tree which only grows in certaions parts of Papua New Guinea. The bark is soaked in water and dried in the sun before being stripped in fibres and spun into twine by rubbing with the hands. The twine is boiled with plant extracts to give a range of colours. The twine is woven into a bilum (net bag) using a pull-through knotting technique. These bags are used for carrying personal belongings. Larger ones are use for carrying vegetables, firewood or even children. For the pictures below, the last two digits of the file name is the price, eg bilum0965 = $65. The measurements are in centimetres.

LARGE YAM MASKS

ORIGIN:

Wosera/Maprik area

SIZE:

all around 60-70cm long

AGE:

recent, used

 OUR PRICE:

$35 each

OTHER INFO:

Yam masks are made to decorate large yams at the annual yam harvest in the Sepik district. The recession in the mask is fitted over a large yam (a tubular shaped vegetable), much as a regular mask would be fitted over a person's face. After the harvest festival, the yam masks are hung from the eaves of the houses all year until the next harvest season when they are brought down, re painted and re-used in the ceremonies. New masks are also made each year.
This tradition of the yam harvest is very strong and indeed the 'back bone' of the village culture today in the villages of this area.
The Wosera and Maprik areas use natural dyes and paints vividly in their rituals, ceremonies and their bilas, though the Maprik yam masks tend to be smoked while the Wosera people usually paint theirs.
These masks are all used.
